Questions for Local Piano Lessons What are DrJo's qualifications? DrJo (Dr. Melissa Gibson) has been involved in music and piano teaching for over 50 years. Her first piano teacher was Thelma P. Wagoner, who was a student of John Thompson (creator of the John Thompson Method), and who once played for Rachmaninoff). Later teachers included Thelma Harris and Landis Baker at Eastern Kentucky University. DrJo has played in numerous churches, for services, funerals, weddings, soloists, and choral ensembles. Additionally, she has taught school music and piano keyboard in several public schools and universities. Where do I go for lessons? On-site piano students may take lessons at DrJo's home in Williamsburg or at her studio at Main Street Baptist Church in Williamsburg. How do Local Private Lessons Work? To initiate a lesson, simply contact DrJo and she will call you to set up a time for the free interview. During the interview, we get to know one another and ask questions. Once a lesson is scheduled, the student should pay for the month in advance, show up at the studio with music and lesson notebook, and be ready to play. Parents are asked to accompany children younger than 9 years old. There is a place in the studio to sit during the lesson. Please do not attend a lesson if the student is ill - contact DrJo and if it is possible, we will reschedule. What kind of equipment/materials do I need?
